The Future of .tel

April 15, 2009

Lets look back first of all to various other innovations in technology. The advent of .com, texting, e-mail & mobile phones.

Initially, all of these were greeted with some scepticism. All were considered a nice idea, but nobody really thought that they would all be such an integral part of our lives.

Dot TEL is no different. At first glance, we don’t necessarily need it. There are various other methods of getting the infomation we need, rather than looking up or remembering someones .TEL name.

However, we don’t need ‘e-mail’ or ‘Texting’ for example. The point is that we all believe that it makes our lives easier. At the outset, these were not technology advancements forced upon us. We forced them upon ourselves. It started with a few and spread like a virus throughout society. Today there are many who can’t imagine life without these tools at our disposal.

.TEL is similar. We don’t need it, but it will make things easier. Easier to find, easier to remember. Third party applications are being introduced daily to integrate .TEL names into other applications. Businesses are already advertising their .TEL name in the press and on signs.

When you see a sign or an advert. How many of you will remember the telephone number, e-mail address, fax number etc ?. Very few. What you will remember if anything is the name. You’ll then look it up on the internet or by some other means to find the telephone number etc. With a Dot TEL, you have all the contact information you need at the click of a button!

.TEL names are also low cost. 150,000,000 smart phones were sold last year. We all know how much these cost to buy and run, so is another $20.00 US per year going to be an issue.

The Benefits !

March 10, 2009

Creating a strong, long lasting relationship with clients is critical real estate agents. Realtors must quickly build a relationship, by establishing trust, demonstrating expertise and offering impeccable service. Success will not only benefit the current opportunity but establish a foundation for ongoing referrals and future purchases.

The difference between good and great is in the details and .tel is an essential detail that differentiates you and sets you ahead of the pack. It tells clients that you recognise their time is valuable and that you go that extra mile to offer client convenience. It tells them that you are easy to reach and available. And it tells them that you are progressive and up to date with modern tools and technologies, so vital in today’s real estate market.

A .TEL is an easy to remember name, like bobSmith.tel or bayRealty.tel, to which all of your contact information can be attached. It can be exchanged in conversation, included on a business card and e-mail signature or in marketing and promotional materials across any medium. It’s simple for customers to tell their friends and easy to recall long after a telephone number has been forgotten or a business card misplaced.

So what is .tel and how will it help me ?

March 5, 2009

.tel is being touted as revolutionising the way we will communicate. Some believe it will quickly become the primary means of contact. Essentially instead of having a telephone No., Fax No., Cell No., ‘Toll Free No’ etc, we will all simply have a .tel extension to a chosen name.

Now here’s the rub. This is a global technology, so only one John Smith can have JohnSmith.tel. The others rather like hotmail accounts for instance will have to get something more obscure or put some numbers at the end of their name. However, that won’t be too much of an issue, (other than the Kudos of having your name).  ‘.Tel’  also incorporates ‘keywords’ to describe yourself and also has the facilty to add location. Therefore, it should be fairly simple to search the .tel directory and find the right person/ business.

So how will this help Realtors ? Like many other professions, Realtors rely very much on reputation and their name is in many cases their brand. Being remembered and community profile help a great deal. In addition, anything new in terms of technology which is leading edge can only be a good thing.

With .tel, you instantly become easier to find, easier to remember and easier to reach. No more signs and business cards filled with contact info, just simply your .tel name.

I recently saw a realtors contact information which consisted of 94 digits including spaces. Now I know this is extreme, but how could I remember that. I may be able to remember part of it and do a search on google for the rest ! There again, I could just look up .tel on my Blackberry and give them a call or send an e-mail.

.tel pages are approximately 100th of the size of a traditional web page, so perfectly suited to mobile devices. What is also absolutely brilliant is that if ever you change your name, e-mail etc. you simply update your .tel and everyone who contacts you via .tel automatically contacts your new number. Da Dah. You will never lose contact with any of your clients. More importantly, they will always have your up to date details.

Now the cost of this is around $20.00 per year (5 Latte’s at Starbucks). Of course you could spend the $20.00 on an alternative form of marketing. If you can find a better way of raising your profile for 20 bucks. Let Me know !
